Portrait of a Learner

A six spoke wheel showing the six components of KCPS Portrait of a Learner. Knowledge, Resilient, Problem Solver, Personally and Socially Responsible, Communicator, and Balance Well Rounded are the components. In the center, a solid color Knox Co.

It all begins with a why. Our purpose.
Our future. Believe, Achieve, Succeed.

It is more than a part of accountability. It is the future of our students and the community they will work and thrive in. Let’s prepare them to be the best.

Believe. Achieve. Succeed. As the student, as the educator, as the community.

  • Possessing and exhibiting knowledge and skills to succeed as a learner, worker, citizen, and leader.

  • Seeking and accepting new and difficult challenges to adapt to; being confident in oneself but flexible in the process.

  • Identifying and solving problems through creative thinking and innovation to address challenges.

  • Acting with integrity and empathy while demonstrating personal accountability; making a positive contribution to family, community, society.

  • Listening and articulating effectively for a variety of purposes; working well with others while being willing to understand and offer alternate views.

  • Making healthy choices to achieve personal well-being and create a well-rounded educational and life experience.

In December 2025, a diverse group of Knox County stakeholders—including students, educators, and community, government, and civic leaders—came together with a shared purpose: to define what it truly means to learn, grow, and succeed in Knox County Public Schools. Through meaningful conversations about aspirations, challenges, and real-world expectations, this group helped shape a collective vision for our students' future.

The result of that work is Knox County’s Portrait of a Learner—a forward-thinking framework that reflects the knowledge, skills, and dispositions every student should develop during their time in our schools.

Our Portrait of a Learner represents more than academic success. It embodies the whole child. It highlights our commitment (schools and community) to preparing students not only for graduation, but for life—equipping them to thrive in college, careers, and their communities.

This portrait serves as a guiding vision for teaching and learning across the district. It ensures that every decision we make—from classroom instruction to district initiatives—aligns with our shared belief in what Knox County students can achieve.

Together, we are preparing learners who are ready to Believe, Achieve, and Succeed in an ever-changing world.
